First Take Friday - Episode 52 BIG BAD JIM Written by Jonathan Brader Tale of the Tune: This tune is the 3rd song in the Western set. The villain in our story is Big Bad Jim. He started out life, in my head, as just a cattle thief, but this morning I was thinking it would be way more fun if he was a really bad dude. So, I wrote him as a really bad dude. As I was writing the song and describing his posse (his bandit friends), I kept getting stuck and the music wasn’t flowing. After about twenty minutes of struggling to come up with something, I thought to myself, "a wanted poster!” So, I wrote/designed the wanted poster featured in the video and that’s how I wrote the song. Next week, you’ll learn more about the hero in our story, Cowboy Dan. Cheers! JB

First Take Friday - Episode 51 Esparelda Written by Jonathan Brader Tale of the Tune: This tune is the 2nd in the Western set. It is the chapter in the story that features, the love interest, Esparelda. This is totally fiction, by the way. Esparelda was a French woman who moved to Santa Fe just before the war (the American Civil War). She was hired by the US Government as a translator for the Cajuns and made her way out west seeking adventure and the most precious of French ideals, Freedom. The freedom and adventure of the west was everything she’d hoped for and she was soon the owner of a Santa Fe saloon called, La Liberte. It was a grand old place. First Take Friday - Episode 50 The Cattle Ranch Written by Jonathan Brader Tale of the Tune: Last week I had surgery to repair a hernia, so I was not able to sing this week. I recorded this song (and 9 others) prior to my surgery. I was hoping that I’d be good to re-record them this week as the songs I recorded were 100% freestyle, as you can tell. This is often how I write songs. I just start making stuff up and if I can record them it makes it really easy to re-write them (sometimes I’m sitting on my porch or nowhere near my phone so I have to remember what came out, which is difficult). I was not physically able to re-write this one yet, so you get the freestyle version. So, I recorded 10 songs (all freestyle) to eventually be a set of songs for an album that tell the tale of Cowboy Dan, a Navajo cattle rancher in New Mexico, back in 1875. If I’m able to sing next week, I’ll likely re-record episode 51, but who knows, maybe I’ll keep it true to the song-writing process and show you how I write songs. That is still TBD. First Take Friday - Episode 49 Who Needs a Beer? Written by Jonathan Brader Tale of the Tune: Who needs a beer? Sometimes there is nothing like an ice cold beer, am I right? Please drink responsibly. |
